This project is a prototype for an interactive music theory tutorial site that combines self-guided lessons with a sequencer for recording and playing back original music. This proof of concept version shows one lesson, related quizzes, and simulates the sequencer playback. In addition to the prototype, the design documentation defines the project from concept to requirements to interface. I used rapid prototyping methods to refine and test the User Interface and ensure an effective experience. In future versions I plan to bring this project to fruition as a reference and creative tool that helps people explore music at their own pace.

The greatest technical challenges on this project were the navigation menu and the quizzes. I went through several tutorials and ideas before getting what I wanted. The original concept for the menu was a hidden roll-over from the whole note in the corner. There were many difficulties doing this, so it was scrapped, and I opted for a straight forward approach. I hope to find a solution to this problem in the future. The quizzes were slightly more available to me once I found what I wanted. Then, there was the challenge of adding images only when certain questions came up. That was a fun part of the process.

I wanted a more organic yet classic feel for the art design, and so I worked with Illustrator and the different shapes of the notes and the staff. The Treble clef is a very interesting shape, and pulling it off the page and adding a ragged brushstroke to the outline started framing the whole project.
